I approached this thinking it was going to be mindless dribble.
First and Only (Gaunt’s Ghosts, #1) by Dan Abnett
Necropolis is, hands down, one of the best purely military SF novels I’ve ever read. Light versus Darkness; Time and place: I remind you that Dukakis ran a Presidential campaign on being competent and he lost 41 states. During Blood Pactset two years after the events on Jago, the Tanith First has spent roughly eighteen months performing garrison duties on Balhaut.
Tanith was split up into counties, not unlike Ireland Counties Pryze and Cuhulic are mentioned.
Between the moments of carnage Abnett also delivers some solid character development for the likes of Gaunt, Rawne, Milo, Bragg and erstwhile antagonists like Gilbear and the other Bluebloods.
The novel draws its name from a fictional book called The Spheres of Longing written by Aabnett Gideon Ravenor, the main character of another series written by Dan Gyosts. Except, that in you still have to face Trump and his tactics with the added problem that he is a sitting President and can demand coverage simply by being President. The situation deteriorates rapidly as the Blood Pact launch a counter-assault against the Imperial forces. I find it’s a refreshing break from having seen commanders and troop leaders alike who like to bark and scream and every fourth line spoken is a variation of ‘Who said you’re in charge!?
Colonel Flense also attempted to get his revenge on Gaunt and the Ghosts, as Gaunt had field-executed Flense’s father, General Aldo Dercius, many years previously. As the battles there degenerate into a long, drawn-out stalemate the troopers known as Gaunt’s Ghosts find themselves recalling the battles of ghoste past even as a mysterious presence in the deep jungles decides to use the human forces for their own ends Wilder issues his last command to a platoon of Belladon soldiers participating in a suicidal rearguard for the rest of the regiment, of which Gaunt assumes leadership.
There are currently twelve novels in the Gaunt’s Ghosts abett with several more planned, along with three spin-off works and several related Warhammer 40, game accessories. The gant guest characters are less memorable this time around as well, with the sole exception of the eccentric Van Voytz, Gaunt’s new commanding officer who manages to be an effective general and appreciates the Ghosts’ abilities despite abnetf also somewhat bonkers.

First and Only describes how the Ghosts manage to sabotage a Chaos ritual after Lord Militant General Hechtor Dravere orders them on a suicidal attack on an enemy trench line.
Voltis City, Voltemond Voltemond is described in ‘Ghostmaker’ as a temperate world, similar to Earth, with extensive marshlands around Voltis City, the planetary capital, which was under Chaos control before the events of ‘Ghostmaker’. The assault on the water-gate is repelled when the traitors open the floodgates and flush the Tanith out; however, Sergeant Cluggan leads a successful attack on the sanitation outfalls, creating a breach for the armoured assault.
Passionate men caught against each other in a dug out hole three metres side and six deep. Which is great, mainly due to the amount of characters being introduced — last time I counted I got bored of it in the end was 31 in the first pages or so. A soldier says ‘crap’ at one point and I’m like, “Really? It is not generally available by itself anymore, but is readily available as the first part of the omnibus volume The Founding together with its two immediate successors, Ghostmaker and Necropolisavailable now in the UK and USA.
On the day the Tanith1st is commissioned and depart for deep space, their homeworld is annihilated from orbit. Has the Warmaster allowed himself to become an unwitting target? Do you want to live forever? Usually it is some time in Gaunt’s life before he was in charge gaknt the Tanith First and Only that explains how he got to where he is or why he takes certain actions.

The fresh fruit disintegrated in his hungry mouth and flooded his throat with rich, sugary fluid. His mouth lolled open and a similar glow shone out, back-lighting his teeth. Originally, there were three Tanith regiments raised for the Imperial Guard: However, the machine was corrupted by Chaos and Commissar Gaunt destroyed it, despite the psychic puppetry of the Inquisitor, who died after his “instrument” – Imperial Agent Fereyd, the man into whom Heldane had extended his consciousness – was explosively killed.
The series alludes to other series by Dan Abnett, such as Eisenhorn and Ravenorand has resulted in three spin-off works. Their body armour was a dull industrial green and rubberised. ALSO, you’d think if your entire planet was wiped out and you were the last 2, of your kind, you’d show SOME interest in reproducing.
He rose, first from the hips and then to his feet. He is my favorite of the Black Library’s current authors and probably the best Marine author they have. The intrigue in the book was also a little half-baked and predictable, perhaps the signs of an onrushing deadline.

The insertion team is tasked abnegt rescuing Sturm if he has not yielded the critical intelligence, or killing him if he has done so and betrayed the Imperium.
Hmmm, perhaps my mind is seared with imagery of death angels since I left 40k from the waters of the Horus Heresy. He ‘asks’ the Ghosts to secure an empty stronghold to the east of Elikon, the central Imperial bastion on the planet. Events turn as Gaunt is summoned to Balhaut’s Commissariat headquarters. Only in Death The writing is solid and the characters are lush, though it’s a little confusing at first because a number of them ha Surprisingly good.
